Getting there
Flights
If you're coming for a short trip, the easiest option is a return flight straight into Cape Town. If you're planning the Garden Route all the way to Port Elizabeth, a flexible flight is worth considering: fly into Cape Town, fly home from Port Elizabeth (or vice versa). You save the long drive back and get to see more along the way.

A hire car is the best way to get around. The Garden Route really only works by car. In Cape Town and other larger cities, Uber is our go-to: cheap, safe and easy.
Short trip · 7–10 days
A week in the Cape. Trust us, it's enough to fall in love with the place.
Cape Town
The city alone could fill a week. Don't miss Table Mountain, a wander along the Waterfront, toes in the water at Camps Bay with views of the Twelve Apostles. If you want something active, a kayak tour along the coast is unforgettable. For something cultural, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden is worth the visit, and at night head to Long Street or one of the city's wonderful markets — the Oranjezicht City Farm Market or the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill.
Stellenbosch & Franschhoek
Two of the most beautiful wine regions in the world, just an hour from Cape Town. Explore the historic oak avenues and wineries of Stellenbosch, and enjoy the best food in the region in Franschhoek. For something special, the Franschhoek Wine Tram is an experience in itself, gliding gently from estate to estate.
The Peninsula
An absolute highlight: drive the whole peninsula. Stop in Llandudno, a quiet, beautiful beach away from the crowds. Then take Chapman's Peak Drive, one of the most spectacular coastal roads in the world. Continue to Simon's Town to see the penguins at Boulders Beach. A moment you won't soon forget.
Hermanus & around
Hermanus is worth the detour. Head over Sir Lowry's Pass for the quicker inland route, or take Clarence Drive (R44) along the coast through Rooi-Els, Betty's Bay and Kleinmond — one of the most scenic roads in South Africa and worth every extra minute. Betty's Bay also has a small penguin colony at Stony Point. Hermanus is world-famous for whale watching (peak season June to November, though sightings still happen in January) and has beautiful hiking trails. For anyone wanting a safari add-on, Inverdoorn Game Reserve is easily reached from here. Big 5, malaria-free and well away from the crowds.
